EVERETT — Gov. Jay Inslee appointed longtime public defender Jon Scott to the Snohomish County Superior Court bench Friday.

Scott will take the seat of another former public defender with extensive courtroom experience, Cassandra Lopez-Shaw, the county’s first Latinx judge. Lopez-Shaw, a colleague and friend of Scott, died of cancer March 3.

Scott, 54, has worked in public and private practice for 22 years in the county. Most recently he served with the Snohomish County Public Defender Association. He has defended clients as a senior attorney in many criminal cases, including the recent high-profile double murder trial of William Talbott II, who was accused of brutally killing a young Canadian couple in 1987.

Prior to law school, Scott served as an active-duty member of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Outside the courtroom, he volunteers as a mock trial coach at Henry M. Jackson High School. He has two children.

Scott earned his law degree from Seattle University.

A memorial service for Lopez-Shaw is set for 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Snohomish County Courthouse.
